Life on an island is pleasant. Especially when it is a tropical island. I have been living on Curaçao for more than 30 years. However, life also brings its own challenges here.
From my “makamba” perspective I like to write about things that strike me or that I experience in the B&B; things you don't think about 1, 2, 3 when it comes to Curaçao. A personal insight for anyone who plans to visit Curaçao and is interested in more than sun, sea and beach. Simply because there is so much more. My blog below is about a young man with a dream!
It was December 31, 1994
Suddenly he was in front of me. I hadn't seen him in a long time, but our first meeting is burned into my retina, like it was yesterday.
Twenty-eight years ago on New Year's Eve, my birthday, I was standing on the beach of Marie Pompoen waiting for my diving students.
It was early in the morning and the beach was deserted when the friendly man approached me.
“What a beautiful place, don't you think?” After I agreed, he informed me of his plans.
Dream place
“This is where I will build my restaurant. The view from the terrace is great. Guests will be able to enjoy a delicious local meal by the water.”
“A very good idea” I said. My students are always hungry after a dive.”
His enthusiasm was contagious.
Then his tone became a little more serious. “Well, you know when you're over 30, it's time to stop whining and do something useful with your life. But of course you know all about that.” I looked at him in disbelief. Like he knew. That very day I turned 30. I never told him.
Christmas messages
And now I find him in the supermarket. His cart full of Christmas groceries for his restaurant, which has been a household name on the island for 28 years.
My guests regularly ask where they can eat delicious local food and then I tell them about that passionate gentleman from Sea Side Terrace !
