Blue Curaçao: A Sunny Adventure in a Bottle

An absurd beginning

Imagine: you unsuspectingly step on a dried-out orange peel and the aroma just about knocks you out. You think to yourself, 'This is it! This is the moment when I become a culinary genius!' And that, dear friends, was the epic beginning of Blue Curaçao sometime in the 19th century. Who would have thought that a peel on the ground would be the starting point of a liqueur that captures the summer vibes of the Caribbean in a bottle?

The mysterious Laraha orange🍊

This fantastic adventure starts with the Laraha orange, a fruity exotic that considers itself the king of Curaçao. When the Spaniards wanted to develop Curaçao in 1499, they brought with them, among other things, the Valencia orange. But the local climate and soil made those oranges so bitter that even the goats ignored them! The trees became something of an exiled outlier in the wild, until someone accidentally discovered that their dried peels gave off a delicious aroma. And so began the bittersweet adventure that is Blue Curaçao!

A family affair with a twist

Behind this seductive elixir lies a family story as captivating as a Netflix series. In the late 19th century, two pharmacists, Isaac Chumaceiro and Edgar Senior, began making orange liqueur according to the recipe of one of their grandfathers. You can imagine that their pharmacy suddenly became a lot more popular! They decided to add a distillery to their dispensary because... why not, right?

A thousand orange trees in Klein Kwartier🌱🌵

The Senior family owned the Klein Kwartier plantation, which once contained around 1,000 orange trees. From the Rooftop of B&B Toni Kunchi (English version) you look out over the farmlands that are the birthplace of the original Blue Curaçao liqueur. In 1947, the Seniors bought out Chumaceiro's widow, who still owned the recipe. In the same year they also took over Landhuis Chobolobo. Since then, this country house has been the basis of the authentic Blue Curaçao liqueur. The orange trees have been moved to another part of Curaçao.

Fruits full of passion

These exotic fruits are picked with love, peeled by hand and processed and distilled in a traditional way. Their dedication and attention to detail make every sip a slice of Caribbean sunshine.

A sensory experience

Blue Curaçao is not just a drink; it's a little piece of Curaçao in a bottle. The bright blue color provides instant cheerfulness and makes you forget the gloomy days. The scent of oranges and exotic spices transports you to a walk along a tropical coastline, while the taste takes you on a journey to paradise.
