Blue Curaçao: A Sunny Adventure in a Bottle
An absurd beginning
Imagine this: You unknowingly step on a dried out orange peel and the aroma nearly knocks you out. You think to yourself, “This is it! This is my moment of culinary genius!” And that, my friends, was the epic beginning of Blue Curacao sometime in the 1800s. Who would have thought that a peel on the ground would be the starting point of a liqueur that captures the summer vibes of the Caribbean in a bottle?
The mysterious Laraha orange🍊
This fantastic adventure begins with the laraha orange, a fruity exotic that considers itself the king of Curacao. When the Spanish wanted to develop Curacao in 1499, they brought the Valencia orange with them. But because of the local climate and soil, these oranges were so bitter that even the goats ignored them! The trees became a kind of banished outsider in the wild, until someone accidentally discovered that their dried peels gave off a delicious aroma. And so began the bittersweet adventure called Blue Curacao!
A family business with a twist
Behind this tantalizing elixir is a family story as compelling as a Netflix series. In the late 1800s, two pharmacists, Isaac Chumaceiro and Edgar Senior, began making orange liqueur using a recipe handed down by one of their grandfathers. As you can imagine, their pharmacy suddenly became a lot more popular! They decided to add a distillery to their pharmacy, because... why not?
A thousand orange trees at Klein Kwartier🌱🌵
The Senior family owned the Klein Kwartier plantation, which once housed around 1,000 orange trees. B&B Toni Kunchi borders the farmlands that were the birthplace of the original Blue Curaçao liqueur. In 1947, the Seniors bought out Chumaceiro's widow, who still had the recipe. In the same year, they also took over Landhuis Chobolobo. Since then, this country house has been the home of the authentic Blue Curaçao liqueur. The orange trees have been moved to another part of Curaçao.
Fruits full of passion
These exotic fruits are lovingly picked, hand-peeled, and traditionally processed and distilled. Their dedication and attention to detail make every sip a slice of Caribbean sunshine.
