Blue Curaçao: A Sunny Adventure in a Bottle
An absurd beginning
Imagine: you step unknowingly onto a dried orange peel and the aroma knocks you almost out. You think to yourself: 'This is it! This is the moment I become a culinary genius!' And that, dear friends, was the epic beginning of Blue Curaçao somewhere in the 19th century. Who would have thought that a peel on the ground would be the starting point of a liqueur that captures the summer vibes of the Caribbean in a bottle?
The mysterious Laraha orange 🍊
This fantastic adventure begins with the laraha orange, a fruity exotic that considers itself only the king of Curaçao. When the Spaniards in 1499 wanted to colonize Curaçao, they brought, among others, the Valencia orange. But due to the local climate and soil, those oranges were so bitter that even the goats ignored them! The trees became a sort of banished oddities in the wild, until someone accidentally discovered that their dried peels emitted a delightful aroma. And so began the bittersweet adventure that is called Blue Curaçao!
A family business with a twist
Behind this seductive elixir lies a family story as captivating as a Netflix series. In the late 19th century, two apothecaries, Isaac Chumaceiro and Edgar Senior, began making orange liqueur according to a grandfather's recipe. You can imagine their pharmacy suddenly becoming a lot more popular! They decided to add a distillery to their pharmacy, because… why not, right?
A thousand orange trees at Klein Kwartier 🌱🌵
The Senior family owned the Klein Kwartier plantation, where there were once about 1,000 orange trees. B&B Toni Kunchi borders the fields that form the birthplace of the original Blue Curaçao liqueur. In 1947 the Seniors bought Chumaceiro's widow, who still held the recipe. In the same year they also took over Landhuis Chobolobo. Since then this manor has been the foundation of the authentic Blue Curaçao liqueur. The orange trees have been moved to another part of Curaçao.
Fruits full of passion
These exotic fruits are picked with love, hand-shelled, and processed and distilled in a traditional way. Their dedication and attention to detail make every sip a piece of Caribbean sunshine.
